AARP Names Florida's Best Employers for Workers 50+
More Florida companies are among AARP’s 2006 Best Employers for Workers Over 50 than from any other state, according to AARP State Director Bentley Lipscomb.
“Florida is leading America into the future,” said Lipscomb. “As the Baby Boomers retire, U.S. industries face high demand for skilled employees. Smart businesses are working now to recruit and retain workers age 50 and older – and that will be good for business as well as for mature workers and the nation.”
Florida winners included:
Sixty percent of AARP honorees this year were health care providers. One such institution, Hospice of Marion County, boasts the highest percentage of employees 50 and older among all of the 2006 AARP Best Employers.
“Fifty-plus employees are the backbone of the workforce at Hospice of Marion County and Affiliated Companies,” said Roy J. Hoxworth, director of human resources. “In fact, 58 percent of our total workforce is over 50, and 62 percent of our leadership staff fall into that category.”
Another Florida winner, Leesburg Regional Memorial Health System/The Villages Regional Hospital, offers extensive benefits including a generous 401(k) program that matches contributions up to 3 percent and better health care and pharmacy benefits than other employers.
Lipscomb noted that another honoree, Busch Entertainment Corp., of St. Louis, Mo., has many mature workers at its facilities at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, Adventure Island and Sea World in Orlando.

Now in its sixth year, the program annually recognizes employers whose work to recruit and retain a mature workforce sets high standards. Innovative practices include phased retirement, flex time, compressed work schedules, job sharing and telecommuting.
